Have you ever gone for a walk in a field and come back with prickly burrs stuck to your clothes? It can be annoying, right? Well, did you know that one day, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral turned this problem into an amazing invention that we still use today?
One day in 1948, George de Mestral was taking a walk when he noticed some cockleburs sticking to his jacket. He looked at them under a microscope and saw that they had tiny hooks on the ends of thin strands. This gave him an idea - what if he could make a fastener that worked just like those hooks?
It took eight long years of experimenting, developing, and perfecting, but finally, George de Mestral came up with a new kind of fastener made of two strips of nylon fabric. One strip had thousands of little hooks, and the other had tiny loops. When you press the two strips together, they stick! This is called a “hook-and-loop fastener,” but most people know it as VELCRO.
VELCRO is strong, lightweight, durable, and washable. It comes in lots of different colors and won’t get stuck or jammed like other fasteners. There are so many uses for hook-and-loop fasteners - on your clothes, shoes, watch bands, or backpacks; around your house or garage; in cars, airplanes, parachutes, and even in space suits and shuttles!
The only downside to VELCRO is that it’s so good, it gives competition to other fasteners like snaps, zippers, buttons, and shoelaces! But overall, VELCRO is an amazing invention that has made life easier for millions of people all over the world.
