Glass
Hey there, young explorers! Did you know that there’s a substance that can do almost anything? It’s called glass! Glass is an amazing material that has been around for thousands of years. People have used it for all sorts of things, like windows, eyeglasses, and even to make beads and jewelry. But how did glass come to be?
Well, nobody knows exactly who invented glass or when it was first discovered. Some people believe that it was made by accident when workers were using fire to create other things. One story goes that Phoenician sailors accidentally made glass when they were camping on the shores of Palestine. They used blocks of natron (carbonate of soda) to support their cooking pots over the fire. The heat caused the natron and beach sand to melt together and create glass!
Glass has been used by people for at least 6,000 years. The Egyptians were some of the first people to use it on a large scale. They made beautiful, blue glass beads that have been found in Egyptian ruins dating back to before 2000 B.C. The process of making glass hasn’t changed much since then, but modern technology has improved it a lot. One cool way to make glass is called glassblowing. It was accidentally discovered by a glassmaker who closed one end of his tube and blew into the other end to remove a blob of glass. Instead of opening, the blob formed a bubble, and he had unintentionally invented glassblowing!
Nowadays, machines can blow around two thousand light bulbs in one minute - how crazy is that? But glass isn’t just used for looking pretty or holding things together. It’s also used to keep us safe! In 1903, a French chemist named Edouard Benedictus accidentally knocked over a glass flask in his laboratory. To his surprise, the glass shattered but still held together in the shape of the flask. He discovered that the flask had been coated in a type of liquid plastic called cellulose nitrate.
Benedictus realized that this “safety glass” could be useful to prevent injuries in things like windshields for cars. But automobile manufacturers didn’t want to use expensive glass, and they only installed safety measures to prevent accidents, not injuries. It wasn’t until World War I that safety glass became widely used for gas mask lenses. And after the war, automobile companies began using it for car windshields! So, there you have it, young adventurers. Glass is an amazing material that can do almost anything! It can bounce bullets, shatter with noise, and even survive trips to the moon. And it all started with a happy accident by some Phoenician sailors on the shores of Palestine.
