Section 1
There was a father who had two sons, the older one was intelligent and capable of accomplishing anything, while the younger one was unintelligent and unable to comprehend or learn anything, people who observed him would comment, "This guy will surely cause his father a lot of difficulties!" Whenever there was a task to be completed, it was consistently the older son who was compelled to carry it out. However, if his father instructed him to retrieve something during the late hours or in the middle of the night, particularly if the route took him through a gloomy location like the churchyard, the older son would reply, "No, father, I won't go there, it fills me with dread!" as he was frightened. Or when chilling tales were recounted by the fire at night, causing the listeners to feel frightened, they would occasionally remark, "Oh, it gives us the shivers!" The younger son would sit in a corner with the others, listening intently, but he could not comprehend what they were talking about. "They always say 'it fills me with dread, it fills me with dread!'" he thought to himself. "I am not frightened by it," he thought to himself. "It must be a skill that I do not understand."
One day, the father spoke to his younger son and said, "Listen to me, you who are sitting in the corner, you are growing tall and strong, and you must also learn something that will enable you to earn a livelihood."
"Observe how your brother works hard, yet you do not contribute anything worthwhile," his father said. "Well, father," the younger son answered, "I am fully prepared to learn something. In fact, if it's possible, I would like to learn how to shudder."
The father let out a sigh and replied, "You will soon find out what it means to shudder, but that alone will not help you earn a living."
Shortly thereafter, the sexton paid a visit to the house, and the father expressed his distress to him. He explained how his younger son was lacking in every aspect and had not learned anything. "I cannot believe it," he said. "When I asked him how he intended to earn his livelihood, he said he wanted to learn how to shudder." "If that is all," responded the sexton, "he can learn that from me. "Send him to me, and I will soon teach him," the sexton said. The father was pleased with the proposal, thinking to himself, "It will at least give the boy some training." The sexton then brought him to his house, and he was given the task of ringing the bell. After a couple of days, the sexton woke him up at midnight and instructed him to go up the church tower and ring the bell. "He will soon discover what it means to shudder," he thought to himself. He then went ahead of the boy and concealed himself. When the boy reached the top of the tower and turned around to grab the bell rope, he noticed a white figure standing on the stairs, facing the opening of the bell chamber.
"Who's there?" he shouted, but the figure remained silent and motionless. "Say something!" exclaimed the boy. "Or get out of here, you have no business being here at night."
The sexton, thinking to himself that the boy wouldn't really harm him, continued to remain silent and motionless. The boy called out to him for a third time, but still received no answer, so he ran towards the figure and pushed it down the stairs, the ghost fell ten steps and landed in a corner. After ringing the bell, the boy went back home, went to bed without saying anything, and fell asleep. The sexton's wife waited for a long time for her husband, but he did not return. After ringing the bell, the boy went back home, went to bed without saying anything, and fell asleep.
