A woodcutter and his wife resided close to a vast forest, and they had a young daughter who was only three years old. Despite their hard work, the couple was extremely impoverished to the extent that they could not afford to buy bread on a regular basis, and were clueless about how to provide food for their little daughter. One morning, with a heavy heart, the woodcutter headed to the forest for work. As he was busy cutting wood, a stunning woman with a dazzling crown of stars suddenly appeared before him. She said: "I am the mother of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary. I see that you are in dire straits, bring your child to me, and I will take her under my care, be her mother, and provide for her needs," said the woman to the woodcutter. "The woodcutter followed the woman's instructions and handed over his daughter to the Virgin Mary. She then took the child with her to heaven. In heaven, the child lived a comfortable life. She ate sugary cakes, drank sweet milk, and wore clothes made of gold. The little angels played with her and kept her company. When the girl turned fourteen, the Virgin Mary summoned her and spoke: "My dear child, I am soon embarking on a long journey, and I entrust you with the keys to the thirteen doors of heaven. You are permitted to unlock twelve doors and witness the magnificence inside them, but the thirteenth door, which this small key unlocks, is strictly off-limits. I warn you against opening it, for it will only bring misery upon you," The girl agreed to follow the Virgin Mary's instructions, and as soon as the woman left, she started exploring the heavenly abodes. Every day, she unlocked one of the doors until she had seen all twelve of them. Inside each, she found one of the Apostles seated in the midst of a great light. She delighted in the grandeur and magnificence of each room, and the little angels who were always with her shared in her joy. The only door that remained unopened was the forbidden one, and the girl felt an intense curiosity to discover what was hidden behind it. She said to the angels, "I won't fully open it, nor will I go inside it, but I will unlock it so that we can peek through the opening and see what's inside." " - "Oh no," said the little angels, "that would be a sin. The Virgin Mary has forbidden it, and it might easily cause thy unhappiness." Despite the angels' warning, the girl's desire to know what was behind the forbidden door persisted and caused her much distress. It consumed her thoughts and didn't allow her to rest. One day, when all the angels had left, she pondered: "I'm all alone now, and I could take a peek. If I do it, no one will ever find out," The girl searched for the key and when she found it, she inserted it into the lock. As she turned the key, the door creaked open, revealing the Trinity sitting in a blaze of fire and splendor. The girl stood there in awe for a while, taking in everything she saw. She was so mesmerized that she even touched the light with her finger, which instantly turned golden. However, as soon as she realized what she had done, a great fear overtook her. She quickly shut the door with a loud noise and ran away. Despite her efforts, the girl could not shake off the terror that had taken hold of her. Her heart continued to beat fast and wouldn't calm down. The gold on her finger also wouldn't fade away, no matter how much she tried to rub or wash it off.
It didn't take long for the Virgin Mary to return from her journey. She summoned the girl before her and asked her to return the keys of heaven. The Virgin Mary looked into the girl's eyes and asked, "Did you not open the thirteenth door as well?" To which the girl replied, "No." The Virgin Mary put her hand on the girl's chest, felt her heart beating fast, and knew that she had disobeyed her command and opened the forbidden door. She asked the girl once again: "Art thou certain that thou hast not done it?" - "Yes," said the girl, for the second time. Then the Virgin Mary noticed the girl's finger, which had turned golden from touching the fire of heaven, and realized that the girl had sinned. She asked the question for the third time: "Hast thou not done it?" - "No," said the girl for the third time. Then said the Virgin Mary: "You have disobeyed me, and furthermore, you have lied. You are no longer deserving to be in heaven."
