There was once a woman who had three daughters, the eldest of whom was called One-eye, because she had only one eye in the middle of her forehead; the second, Two-eyes, because she had two eyes like other folks; and the youngest, Three-eyes, because she had three eyes; and her third eye was also in the center of her forehead.
But because Two- eyes could see things like other people could, her mother and sisters were unable to put up with her. She was told by them: "You, with your two eyes, are no better than the common people; you do not belong to us!" They did anything they could to make her miserable, including pushing her around, throwing old clothes at her, giving her nothing but what they had left to eat, and pushing her around. Two-eyes had to look after the goat in the fields as her sisters had given her so little food, but even so, she was still pretty hungry. She started to cry so fiercely as she sat down on the peak and started to do so that two streams came out of her eyes. A woman who was standing next to her asked, "Why are you crying, little Two-eyes?" as she glanced up in her sorrow. Two- eyes replied, "Have I not cause tears to appear, since I have two eyes like everyone else, so my mother and sisters push me around, throw old clothes at me, and only give me the leftovers to eat because they hate me for it? I received so little today that I am still extremely hungry.” The wise woman then instructed Two-eyes, "Wipe away your tears, and I will teach you something to stop you from ever experiencing hunger again; simply say to your goat,
"Bleat, bleat, my little goat, fill the table with food to eat,"
after she finished speaking, a small table covered in white cloth appeared. On the table was a plate with a knife, fork, and silver spoon. The most delectable food was also present, warm and smoking as if it had just been prepared. Then Two-eyes uttered the briefest prayer she was familiar with: "Lord God, be with us always, Amen," before helping herself to some food and taking a bite. As the wise woman had instructed her, when she was pleased, she said,
"Bleat, bleat, my little goat, I pray, And take the table quite away,"
the small table and everything on it disappeared right away. Two-eyes thought, "This is a wonderful way to keep house!" and was quite pleased.
She discovered a small ceramic dish with some food that her sisters had laid out for her when she returned home that evening with her goat, but she kept away from touching it. The following day, she took her goat out again while leaving the few pieces of broken bread that had been given to her untouched. Her sisters paid no attention the first and second times she did this, but as it continued, they did notice and commented, "There is something wrong with Two-eyes, she always leaves her food untouched, and she once ate up everything that was given to her; she must have found other ways of getting food." They decided to send One-eye along with Two-eyes when she drove her goat to the field so they could watch what she did and see whether anyone offered her food or drink in order to discover the truth. Therefore, One-eye went to Two-eyes the following time she set out and said, "I will go with you to the fields and see that the goat is well cared for and driven where there is food." The goat was driven into tall grass by Two-eyes, who then said to One-eye, "Come, One-eye, we will sit down, and I will sing something to you," knowing exactly what was going through One-eye's head. As Two-eyes sang nonstop, One-eye sat down, exhausted from the struggling walk and the heat,
"One eye, are you awake? One eye, do you sleep?"
until One-eye closed her eye and went to sleep. When Two-eyes noticed that One-eye was sound asleep and unable to find anything, she said,
"Bleat, my little goat, bleat, Cover the table with something to eat,"
and sat down at her table, eating and drinking until she was full before saying once more,
"Bleat, my little goat, bleat, Cover the table with something to eat,"
and everything vanished in a moment. As soon as One-eye was up, Two-eyes stated, "One-eye, you'd like to take care of the goat and go to sleep while you are doing it. However, in the meanwhile, the goat might run all over the world. Come, let's return home. Once again, Two-eyes left her small dish unattended when they got home. Unable to explain to her mother why she was refusing to eat it, One-eye excused herself by saying, "I fell asleep while I was out."
