Section 1
"It must be a wonder to you how, after experiencing shipwreck and unimaginable dangers five times before, I dared to challenge fate once again and embrace new risks. Even I find it surprising when I reflect on it, but evidently, destiny had destined me to wander. Despite the pleas and protests of my friends and family, who did everything in their power to keep me at home, I decided to embark on a sixth voyage. Instead of traversing the Persian Gulf, I chose to travel extensively overland, eventually boarding a ship from a distant Indian port, helmed by a captain intent on undertaking a lengthy expedition. And indeed, he succeeded in doing so, for we encountered tempestuous weather that completely veered us off course. For days on end, neither the captain nor the pilot had any inkling of our whereabouts or intended destination. When they eventually ascertained our position, our relief was short-lived. The captain, casting his turban upon the deck and tearing at his beard, proclaimed that we had stumbled upon the most treacherous spot in the vast expanse of the sea. We had been ensnared by a current that was at that very moment propelling us toward our demise. It was true! Despite the valiant efforts of the sailors, we were mercilessly propelled with terrifying velocity toward the base of a mountain that jutted out precipitously from the sea. Our vessel was mercilessly shattered upon the rocks at its foundation, albeit not before we managed to scramble ashore, clutching tightly to our most prized possessions. Once we had accomplished this feat, the captain addressed us with these words: "
"Now that we find ourselves in this dire situation, all we have to do is to commence digging our graves without delay, for no mariner stranded in this accursed place has ever managed to escape."
These disheartening words weighed heavily upon us, and we commenced lamenting our wretched destiny.
The mountain acted as a formidable barrier, marking the boundary between the vast island and the open sea. The narrow strip of rocky shore on which we stood was a haunting graveyard for countless brave ships, their wreckage scattered about like morbid decorations. The bleached bones of ill-fated mariners glistened under the harsh sunlight, and a chilling realization took hold of us: soon, our remains would join this grim assembly. Surrounding us were vast quantities of exquisite merchandise, treasures tucked into every crevice of the rocks. Yet, instead of offering solace, these riches only deepened the desolation of the scene. A peculiar sight caught my attention—a river of crystal-clear freshwater burst forth from the mountain, not far from where we stood. Contrary to the natural course of rivers, which usually flow into the sea, this one sharply veered and disappeared beneath a natural rock archway. Intrigued, I ventured closer to examine it, only to discover that the cave's walls were adorned with thick clusters of diamonds, rubies, and crystals, while the floor was scattered with ambergris. In this desolate place, we resigned ourselves to our fate, for scaling the treacherous mountain was an impossibility, and any passing ship would share our inevitable doom. Our captain took immediate action, dividing our meager food supplies equally among us. From that moment on, the duration of each person's life hinged upon their ability to make their portion last. I could live upon very little.
However, as I laid to rest the final companion, my stock of provisions had dwindled to such an extent that I doubted I would survive long enough to dig my own grave. The bitter regret for my restless nature, which had consistently led me into such dire straits, filled my thoughts, and I yearned for the comfort and opulence I had forsaken. Yet, by a stroke of luck, an impulse guided me back to the river's edge, where it vanished into the depths of the cavern. At that moment, an idea sparked within me. The river, concealed beneath the ground, surely resurfaced at some distant location. Why not construct a raft and entrust me to its swift currents? If I were to perish before emerging into the daylight once more, my situation would be no worse than the imminent death I faced in the present. However, there remained the possibility, given my fortunate disposition, that I might find myself unharmed and in a desirable land. Determined to take the risk, I swiftly assembled a sturdy raft from the abundant driftwood strewn along the shoreline. Using strong cords that I had at my disposal, I secured numerous bundles containing rubies, emeralds, rock crystal, ambergris, and precious fabrics, ensuring a balanced distribution on the raft. With two small oars that I fashioned, conveniently positioned within reach, I released the cord that bound me to the riverbank. Propelled by the current, my raft swiftly navigated under the somber archway, plunging me into utter darkness. I glided forward effortlessly, carried along by the rapid river.
