After completing my sixth voyage, I firmly resolved to abandon life at sea. At this point in my life, I had reached an age where I cherished tranquility and had already taken enough risks. All I desired was to spend my remaining days in peace. One fateful day, however, while I was hosting a gathering of my friends, I was informed that a Caliph's officer expressed a desire to have a conversation with me. Upon permitting him to enter, he beckoned me to accompany him into the presence of Haroun al Raschid, and I compiled without hesitation. As I entered, I greeted the Caliph respectfully, and he spoke:
"Sindbad, I have summoned you because I require your services. I have chosen you to deliver a letter and a gift to the King of Serendib as a token of our friendship."
The Caliph's request struck me like a bolt of lightning.
"Commander of the Faithful," I replied, "I am prepared to carry out your Majesty's orders, but I beseech you to bear in mind the immense sufferings I have endured. I am utterly disheartened, and I have sworn never to leave Baghdad again."
In response, I proceeded to recount a detailed narrative of my most extraordinary adventures, and he patiently listened to every word.
"I acknowledge," he remarked, "that you have indeed encountered some truly remarkable experiences. However, I fail to comprehend why they should impede you from fulfilling my request. All you need to do is travel directly to Serendib, deliver my message, and then you shall be at liberty to return and pursue your desires. But you must go; my honor and prestige necessitate it."
Realizing that there was no way around it, I reluctantly expressed my willingness to comply. Delighted to have prevailed, the Caliph rewarded me with a thousand sequins to cover the expenses of my voyage. Without delay, I made the necessary preparations and set sail from Balsora, reaching Serendib swiftly and safely. Upon revealing the purpose of my visit, I was warmly received and ushered into the presence of the king, who greeted me with elation.
"Sindbad, welcome!" he exclaimed. "I have often contemplated your return and now rejoice to see you once more."
Expressing gratitude for the bestowed honor, I unveiled the gifts from the Caliph. First, a magnificent bed adorned with golden draperies, valued at a thousand sequins, followed by another bed of crimson fabric. There were fifty robes embellished with intricate embroidery, and a hundred pieces of the finest white linen sourced from Cairo, Suez, Cufa, and Alexandria. Additionally, there were diverse beds of unique designs, an intricately carved agate vase depicting a man aiming an arrow at a lion, and, lastly, a precious table that had once graced the chambers of King Solomon. The King of Serendib received these offerings with great satisfaction, appreciating the Caliph's friendly gesture. With my mission fulfilled, I eagerly sought to depart, yet the king delayed my departure for a considerable time. Eventually, he bid me farewell, bestowing upon me numerous parting gifts. Without wasting any time, I boarded a ship that set sail immediately. For the initial four days, our journey progressed smoothly. However, on the fifth day, misfortune befell us as we encountered pirates who attacked our vessel, mercilessly slaying those who resisted and taking captive those who wisely surrendered, myself included. Once they had plundered all our possessions, they compelled us to don wretched garments. Sailing to a distant island, they sold us into slavery. I found myself in the possession of a wealthy merchant who welcomed me into his home, providing me with clothing, nourishment, and care. After some days, he summoned me and inquired about my skills and abilities.
I explained that I was a wealthy merchant who had been captured by pirates, and consequently, I possessed no particular trade or skill.
"Tell me," he inquired, "are you proficient in archery?"
I responded that archery had been one of my pastimes during my youth, and with practice, I believed my skills would resurface.
In response, he provided me with a bow and arrows, and together, mounted on his elephant, we set off towards an expansive forest situated far from the town. When we reached the most untamed part of the forest, we halted, and my master instructed me, saying, "This forest teems with elephants. Conceal yourself within this colossal tree and shoot at any that pass by. Once you have successfully slain one, come and inform me."
