Section 1
Despite my wealth and happiness after my third voyage, I couldn't bring myself to stay at home for too long. The thrill of trading and my fascination with anything new and unfamiliar drove me to organize my affairs and embark on a journey through various Persian provinces. Before my departure, I arranged for goods to be sent ahead to the different places I intended to visit. Setting sail from a distant seaport, everything went smoothly for a while. However, our luck took a turn when we found ourselves caught in a violent hurricane, which ultimately led to the destruction of our vessel despite the valiant efforts of our captain. Sadly, many of our fellow travelers perished in the raging waves.
Fortunately, a few of us managed to survive by clinging to pieces of the wreckage. The storm had driven us close to an island, and we struggled ashore, exhausted and grateful for our rescue from the merciless sea. As dawn broke, we ventured further inland and soon discovered some huts. As we approached, a multitude of black inhabitants emerged, surrounding us and guiding us to their dwellings. We were divided among our captors, and I, along with five others, was taken into one of the huts. There, we were instructed to sit on the ground while the natives offered us certain herbs, gesturing for us to consume them. Noticing that they refrained from touching them, I merely pretended to taste my portion. Unfortunately, my companions, driven by hunger, thoughtlessly devoured all that was presented to them. To my horror, it was not long before they descended into madness. Despite their incessant babbling, I couldn't comprehend their words, nor did they pay any attention when I tried to communicate with them. The savages then brought forth large bowls filled with rice prepared with coconut oil, which my deranged comrades eagerly devoured. Meanwhile, I cautiously sampled only a few grains, fully aware that our captors intended to fatten us quickly for their consumption. And that is precisely what happened. My ill-fated companions, devoid of reason, felt neither anxiety nor fear as they greedily consumed all that was offered to them. Soon enough, they became plump, and their fate was sealed. However, I grew increasingly emaciated with each passing day. Consuming only minimal sustenance, my fear of what awaited me hindered any benefit I could derive from the meager rations. Nevertheless, since I was far from them, I was granted the freedom to roam about at will. One day, while all the black inhabitants had departed on an expedition, leaving only an elderly man to guard me, I seized the opportunity to escape. Ignoring his desperate pleas for my return, I darted into the dense forest, my pace quickening as his cries faded into the distance until I had successfully eluded him entirely.
For seven days, I pressed on relentlessly, pausing only when darkness veiled my path. During these moments of respite, I sustained myself primarily on coconuts, which provided both sustenance and hydration. On the eighth day, I arrived at the seashore and beheld a group of white men diligently gathering plentiful supplies of pepper that grew abundantly in the vicinity. Encouraged by the nature of their occupation, I approached them, and they greeted me in Arabic, inquiring about my identity and place of origin. My joy was immense upon hearing this familiar language, and I readily satisfied their curiosity, recounting the story of my shipwreck and capture by the black natives. "But these savages consume humans!" they exclaimed. "How did you manage to escape?" I reiterated the account I had just shared with you, leaving them greatly astonished. I stayed with them until they had gathered the desired amount of pepper, and they graciously escorted me back to their homeland, presenting me to their king, who welcomed me with warm hospitality. I had to recount my adventures to him as well, which greatly intrigued him. Upon concluding my narrative, he commanded that I be provided with sustenance, and garments, and treated with utmost respect.
