Section 1

Not even all the trials I had endured could satisfy my desire for a tranquil existence. The allure of a quiet life quickly lost its appeal, and I yearned for transformation and excitement. Hence, I embarked on another journey, this time aboard a vessel of my creation, which I constructed and equipped at the nearest seaport. I longed for the freedom to visit any port of my choosing, embracing a leisurely pace. Since I did not intend to carry a full cargo, I extended invitations to numerous merchants from diverse nations to accompany me. With the first favorable wind, we embarked on our voyage, traversing vast expanses of open seas until we arrived upon an uncharted island devoid of inhabitants. Despite its desolation, we were determined to explore that new place. However, our exploration was interrupted when we stumbled upon an enormous roc's egg, nearly hatched, with the young bird's beak piercing through the shell. Regardless of my efforts to dissuade them, the merchants in my company mercilessly attacked the egg with their hatchets, shattering its delicate shell and ending the life of the young roc. They then kindled a fire on the ground and began to butcher pieces from the bird, proceeding to roast them while I stood by, horrified.

Barely had they concluded their feast when the sky above us became shrouded in darkness, cast by two colossal shadows. The captain of my vessel, well acquainted with such encounters, urgently warned us that the parent birds were approaching and implored us to hastily board the ship. Swiftly complying, we raised the sails, yet before we could make any headway, the rocs reached their violated nest, circling it while emitting terrifying cries upon discovering the mutilated remains of their young one. Briefly, they vanished from sight, leading us to believe we had eluded their wrath. Alas, they reappeared, soaring above our vessel, each gripping an enormous boulder with its claws, poised to crush us. A moment of breathless suspense ensued, then one of the birds released its hold, propelling the massive stone through the air. Yet, owing to the quick thinking of our helmsman, who abruptly veered the ship in another direction, the boulder plunged into the sea just beside us, violently splitting the water until its depths were almost visible. Before we could even exhale a sigh of relief, the second rock plummeted from above with a thunderous crash, obliterating our ill-fated craft into countless fragments and hurling passengers and crew members into the unforgiving waters. Alongside the unfortunate others, I submerged, but fortune smiled upon me as I emerged unscathed. Clinging to a piece of driftwood with one hand and swimming with the other, I managed to keep afloat until the tide carried me to the shores of an island.

Its precipitous and rocky edges did not deter me, and I successfully scrambled up, throwing myself onto the verdant turf to seek respite. Once I had regained some strength, I began to explore the surroundings in which I found myself, and it truly appeared to be a garden of delights. Trees abounded, their branches heavy with flowers and fruit, while a crystalline stream meandered through the shadows they cast. When nightfall arrived, I slumbered peacefully in a cozy corner, although the knowledge of being alone in an unfamiliar land occasionally startled me, prompting me to anxiously scan my surroundings. At such moments, I fervently wished I had remained comfortably at home. Nevertheless, the morning sunlight rejuvenated my courage, and I once again strolled amidst the trees, albeit with a certain apprehension regarding what I might encounter next. As I ventured deeper into the island, my eyes beheld an elderly man, stooped and feeble, seated by the riverbank. Initially, I assumed him to be a fellow mariner who had suffered a shipwreck, akin to my predicament. Approaching him, I offered a friendly greeting, but he merely nodded in response. Curiosity piqued, I inquired about his presence, to which he gestured his desire to cross the river and gather some fruit, appearing to beseech me to carry him upon my back. Moved by compassion for his age and frailty, I lifted him and waded through the stream, stooping low to aid his disembarkation onto the bank. However, instead of allowing himself to be placed on his feet (even now, the memory of it elicits laughter), this seemingly feeble creature agilely leaped upon my shoulders, swiftly hooking his legs around my neck and gripping me so tightly that I struggled to breathe. Overwhelmed by terror, I succumbed to unconsciousness and collapsed to the ground. When I regained my senses, my adversary still clung to his perch, albeit loosening his grip slightly to grant me some respite. Observing my revival, he prodded me skillfully with first one foot, then the other, until I was compelled to rise and stumble about with him beneath the trees while he plucked and devoured the most exquisite fruits. This ordeal persisted throughout the day and extended into the night. Even when I collapsed, half-dead from exhaustion, the dreadful old man clung tenaciously to my neck, and as soon as the faintest glimmer of morning emerged, he drummed upon me with his heels, coercing me into wakefulness and resuming our dreary march. Rage and bitterness seethed within my heart.
