Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (Charles John Huffam Dickens) was an English writer and social critic. He was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth. As the family was poor, Dickens left school at the age of 12 to work in a boot-blacking factory when his father was in a debtors' prison. Meanwhile, he began his literary career as a journalist. He started writing his novels, and short stories as well as he campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.

Did you know that during this time Dickens also considered becoming an actor? Well, let’s say he was so serious about the matter that he arranged for an audition at the Lyceum Theater. However, he was ill on the day of his audition and could not go. His mission was to become a great writer and activist. He is regarded by many as a literary genius and the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

Some of his famous novels include Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, The Tale of Two Cities, and more. Dickens followed his path and never gave up despite the challenges he faced. He overcame those challenges and wrote brilliant pieces that touch our hearts.
